Since we can’t possibly offer every short out there, we try to offer the best of them. CartoonBrewFilms offers a hand-picked collection of world-class animated shorts ranging from today’s festival hits to Golden Age classics to difficult-to-find foreign shorts to lost rarities. We choose our films carefully and evaluate each short for its artistic merit, public availability, historical value and other criteria.

Great Films, One At A time

Our films aren’t lumped together or pre-programmed in uninspiring collections. We invite you to program an animation festival suited to your individual tastes. To help guide your purchases, we work hard to give context to the films. Each film is accompanied by a short essay that provides background details about the production and its filmmakers. Also, you can review the films to help guide other users, and ask filmmakers questions about their work. We’re currently working to add many new features including a regular video podcast featuring filmmaker interviews.

Yes, we charge a modest $2 download fee per film.We believe that’s a small price to support some of the world’s greatest artists. It’s true—there are plenty of other sites that give away films for free or pay filmmakers negligible amounts of advertising revenue. But while that may initially seem like a good deal for the viewer, it hurts everybody in the long run. If filmmakers don’t make money, they won’t produce new films, and if they don’t produce new films, we don’t have anything to sell, and if we don’t have anything to sell, you don’t have anything to watch.

At CartoonBrewFilms, we are reshaping the dynamic of online short film distribution by ensuring that a large percentage of your purchase goes back directly to the filmmaker. We’re not just a distributor of animated shorts, but a partner with filmmakers, working closely with them to find the best ways to support and promote their efforts. Together—audience, filmmakers and CartoonBrewFilms—we will start a revolution and prove that there is a viable way for short filmmakers to earn money from their films on the Internet.

Who We Are

CartoonBrewFilms is created by two of the art form’s most passionate and tireless supporters—Jerry Beck and Amid Amidi. Not only are they the creators of CartoonBrew.com, the most widely read and respected animation blog on the Internet, they also have extensive experience in the industry and are distinguished historians and authors. Their books include Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies: A Complete Illustrated Guide to the Warner Bros. Cartoons, Cartoon Modern: Style and Design in Fifties Animation, The 50 Greatest Cartoons and The Art of Fox/Blue Sky’s Robots).

Just to mention a few more of their credits: Jerry Beck is a consulting producer on the Looney Tunes Golden Collection dvds, a former executive at Nickelodeon, and co-founder of Streamline Pictures, the first company dedicated exclusively to importing and distributing anime in North America. Amid Amidi is the publisher and editor of Animation Blast magazine, worked on the TV series Ren & Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon, and is the former associate editor of Animation World Magazine.
